Crane-fucker is such a cunt. I really can’t stand him—hence how many times I’ve recently bitched about him. We’ve been seeing some subtle, gradual changes in Tien’s attitude over the past few episodes, so I have a feeling Crane‘s going to end up pissing him off if he pulls too much devious bullshit to rig this fight—a challenge which Tien seems to be enjoying as much as Goku. I don’t actually remember this part of the show (we might be well beyond what I’d seen as a kid), but that’s a suspicion I have. I’m pretty sure Roshi reached Tien more than it seems right now, so this should be interesting. (I know where Tien ends up later down the line, but how he gets there, I’m not sure. This is new territory for me.)
Oh, and just to point something out: There have actually been signs that Roshi was right about Tien having a conscience almost the whole time Tien has been in the show, despite how much of a prick he’s been. If you get a spare moment, it might be worth going back to the part where Tien and Chiaotzu were scamming the villages with Ino-Shika-Cho. (Episode 82, I think.) Watch Tien’s face—and really his entire countenance—during the part where he was trying to frame Goku for the crimes: He gets visibly very uncomfortable while waiting for Goku to incriminate himself by rescuing Ino-Shika-Cho from the fire, and I really didn’t get the impression it was just because he was afraid of getting caught. I don’t think he was comfortable with what he himself was doing to his piggy friend. Tien’s not nearly as cold as he tries to convince himself he is, and he’s not as sadistic as he tries to convince others he is—and we can already see that as his “I love killing people for giggles” façade continues to falter. I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes.
