So Son Goku is the Japanese name of Son Wukong the monkey king from journey to the west. Dragon Ball is heavily inspired by Journey to the west and Goku is meant to be a version of the monkey king. Hence why he can turn into a giant Gorilla under a full moon
Goku is not a werewolf he's a giant Ape, very similiar to the 4 tailed beast Son Goku from Naruto but only 1 tail and not red. Also in Japan or Japanese Goku is actually called Son Goku.
Yup and his original design he was an actual monkey boy
