Some extra information about the new dragon riders: Based on the story Hugh told his wife, people are thinking that his mother was most likely Princess Saera Targaryen. King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne had thirteen children. There was a big age difference between the older ones, who included Viserys and Daemon’s parents and Rhaenys mother, and the younger ones that included some very difficult children. One of the younger ones was Princess Saera, who was quite a wild child. In the episode in Season One that included the Royal Hunt, Lyonel Strong was reminding Viserys of all the trouble that King Jaehaerys had because of his younger daughters, when Rhaenyra was giving Viserys headaches. Saera was involved in a sexual scandal and Jaehaerys sent her to live with her sister who had become a Septa. After a time, Saera ran away to the Free City of Lys and became a sex worker. She eventually owned her own establishment and had a number of children. Even though the show didn’t specifically say that Hugh’s mother was Saera, the clues were that Hugh said his mother worked in a Pleasure House. That would have been the correct terminology for Lys. In Westeros they would have said it was a brothel. And he said that she was granted extra benefits because of who she was. They might not have done that for just a Targaryen bastard. But a true Targaryen princess would definitely get special treatment. Also Viserys and Daemon would have been her brothers children, as Hugh said. The question is why would Saera’s son move to Westeros and become a blacksmith, especially when his mother had become quite wealthy? He did say something about being embarrassed by her. And the show definitely seems to be pointing people in that direction without outright saying it. In the book Fire & Blood we are never told how Hugh and Ulf are related to the Targaryens. I don’t have anything to really add about Ulf, other than how some people are joking about how Silverwing might think he hatched from one of her eggs! Silverwing and Vermithor are as close as we get to a pair of dragons that are bonded with each other. Their last riders were Queen Alysanne and King Jaehaerys. It’s ironic that Saera’s son might have claimed Jaehaerys’ dragon, when he had so much trouble with her. He forbade Queen Alysanne from making contact with Saera after she ran away. One last detail, people noticed that when Vermithor was rampaging he knocked Ulf off of the platform and might have left some of his dragon scent on him, which is another reason that Silverwing might have been more inclined to accept him.

Daemon did see Viserys in person when he looked like he did in this vision. Daemon was at the Red Keep the day that Viserys died. That was the same day that they held Court to decide the inheritance of Driftmark and House Velaryon. It was the day that Daemon put the Crown back on Viserys’ head and cut the head off of Corlys brother. At the dinner that followed, Viserys removed his half-mask so that everyone could see the extent of the damage from his disease. And Daemon was there for that dinner.

As I watched people react to this episode, many were surprised that Addam of Hull did not tell Rhaenyra that Corlys was his father. But I would be surprised if he had made that claim when Corlys has not said anything about it, especially in any public manner. I don’t think that Addam would have felt that he had the right to do that when he has not been acknowledged by Corlys and he has no idea how Corlys would react to that assertion.
