Suzy, in the Dragon Ball universe, their power levels are based on their fighting spirit, or energy levels. It is referred to as Ki (pronounced like "key"). Kind of like Chakra in Naruto, or reiatsu in Bleach. As the series progresses, their understanding of Ki and control of it progresses.
So to make things clear, a few episodes back when you were wondering why Yajirobe didn't help Goku fight, it wouldn't have mattered. Piccolo's power level was way too high for it to make a difference. Hope that gives you a better understanding without spoiling too much!

In the japanese Version the kanji 魔 stands for Demon and it is read as MA.
But the pig with sunglasses don't know how to write the kanji, and can just write the japanese letter MA >ま.
